A Freshen Up.......in Shady Canyon

Just like cars need a 'tune up', yards need a 'Freshen Up'!

This yard was installed 3 years ago. This is a beautiful home with what should be a 'low water' Mediterranean plant palette that would compliment the architecture. When this house was built the plant palette called for low water plants but the original landscape contractor did not take this into account when installing the irrigation and drainage. Basic spray head irrigation was installed with a watering schedule that drenched the plants. After time, the installed plants would simply die due to over watering and poor drainage.

To the homeowner's frustration plants died. These bare areas are located in low lying and poorly drained areas, like the one pictured above. Most homeowners might not realize the problem and continue to re-plant over and over again to no avail.

Your local average gardener might try to patch this problem. They will replant hoping the problem will go away. They might even turn off the irrigation for a period of time hoping that the wet patches will dry up. We at Garden Studio meet homeowners with this is problem all of the time. Beautiful homes with elaborate landscaping that was installed wrong. Overwatered and poorly drained landscapes are really hard on plants. The golden rule is that plants want the right amount of water and the roots can never just sit in moisture for long periods of time. The key to healthy plants is 'water on and water off'.

California Hillscaping

Who doesn't love a natural California hillside?

This week I was lucky enough to be able to design a local california hilside. One of the biggest challenges in design is to recreate nature. Garden Studio was given this very challenge on an acre and a half in San Juan Capistrano. The goal was to create a landscape that reflected a hillside at its best.

The hillside will be covered with 'Native Preservation Mix' grass from the Delta Bluegrass Company. This is a mix of California native grasses; Nasella cemua, Nasella pulchra, Koeleria macrantha and Festuca rubra.

A natural gravel path will be recreated with this gravel called 'California Gold Chip'.

Natural mounds of green California native shrubbery called Baccharis pilularis, Coyote Bush will be placed in clusters along the path.

Natural rock boulders will placed along the path punctuating the drama of the natural California landscaping.

This striking flower is a California native not to be missed. Romneya coulteri is also referred to as the 'Fried Egg Plant'.

And sprinkled throughout will be the darling of California, the California Poppy.

I know that at times we all have commitment problems so here is an easy way to plan a temporary garden! When you're ready to be done with your project it can be easily dismantled and stored until the next time you get the gardening bug. Chocolate Crackle Cookies

(This is a cookie my grandmother made at Christmas)

8 oz bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped

1 1/4 cups all purpose flour

1/2 cup Hershey's cocoa powder

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup milk

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup powdered sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt chocolate in a heat proof bowl over a pan of simmering water stirring. Set aside, and let cool. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl: set aside.

2. Mix butter and brown sugar on medium until fluffy, 2-3 minutes. Mix in eggs and vanilla, and then the melted chocolate. Reduce speed to low and mix in flour mixture along with milk. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours or until firm.

3. Roll dough into 1" balls and roll in granulated sugar and then powered sugar. Space 2 inches apart on baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

4. Bake for 14 minutes. Let cool. Cookies can be stored in air tight containers for up to 3 days.

Yard Work

My late Grandparents, Jack and Pat Boyd

of Sherman Oaks, Cailfornia.

The Holidays are a time to reflect and remember those who have touched our lives. My Grandparents considered gardening both a hobby and a chore. They passed away several years ago, but I often think of the many ways they influenced my life. In their day (they graduated from college in the 1940's), very few people hired professional Landscape Gardeners or Designers. Although they considered their landscaping a thing of beauty, like many people they toiled in their own yard on weekends. Even though it might have been labor intensive, they fully embraced the process of what they called yard work.

On his free time, my grandfather lovingly tended his perfect lawn, a constant source of pride. Seasonally, my grandmother diligently replaced her garden borders with annual color like petunias, impatiens, begonias, marigolds, viola and more. Every Spring, my grandfather planted terracotta pots with strawberry plants and I remember many happy times hunting ripe strawberries as I played in the yard.

In Summertime, my grandparents would transform their yard for outdoor entertaining. The layout out of their yard was simple, a brick patio with a large grass area surrounded by planter beds and a huge Sycamore Tree for shade. Their BBQ was, of course, a Weber Grill and when it was time to entertain this space became our home outdoors. Indoor tables and chairs were brought out onto the patio. Crisp linen tablecloths and napkins made the outdoor space feel finished. White twinkle lights in the trees offered ambiance.

Meals were prepared, potato salad with tangy BBQ'd chicken and, of course, my grandmother's favorite, the Brown Derby Cobb Salad, yum! For dessert they made their speciality, homemade vanilla ice cream with the old hand crank machine. Everyone would help turn the crank with anticipation of this perfect Summertime desert.

As a child I subconsciously studied the care my Grandparents lovingly took with all of these outdoor living details. They worked hard on their yard and their outdoor space was truly their sanctuary. Without exactly knowing it, their yard work created a simple yet sophisticated aesthetic. I think about them often as I create outdoor living spaces at Garden Studio Design.

Sometimes it is the well appointed details that make the biggest difference. Garden Studio Design transformed a backyard that was seldom used into an enchanting destination that reflects the homes refined appointments.

A salvaged wood mantel with votives is one of the

first things guests see as they enter the backyard.

The loggia was built right off the family room

with a fireplace and seating for 8-10 people.

The new loggia is furnished with the same level of detail as any interior space. A far cry from the 'garden center' furnishing that sat outside unoccupied prior to the landscape remodel. (Before pictures will follow.)

Chic custom cushions and pillows give

the landscape remodel a tailored feel.

A rustic garden path leads the visitor to a garden retreat.

The new private garden off the living room's

grand scale windows provides a glimpse

of the outdoors and invites guests to tour the garden.

Although this yard is long and skinny

one outdoor room leads into the next.

This Gloster dining table and chairs are one of my favorites. I love the mix of teak table with woven chairs. These chairs look like wicker but are actually a polyethylene based product (plastic). These chairs are completely weatherproof and extremely hard wearing.

The architecture of the house evokes an English Estate.

The property is located in the canyons of L.A.

and this hillside of perennials sets the scene.

An extra large Spa with an 'infinity edge' is

perfect for a cool dip on hot Summer days.

This fountain was designed and

built to evoke an old world flavor.

This yard suffers from what I call the 'Garden Center Aesthetic'. This is a picture of the patio before the Loggia was built and the seating in the photo is practical but so dull and uninviting.

Sometimes color acts as the best inspiration for design. I put together a stream of consciousness study of 'black' to 'grey' to 'white' and have woven in some practical landscape ideas anyone can add to their home. I also can't help adding a bit of fashion too. I believe style can be translated to any medium.

Martha Stewart has a wonderful collection of paint colors available through Home Depot. Visit her website for a study of paint colors in what she calls sophisticated neutrals. This kitchen paint color is 'putty'. I think that it would make a really nice exterior paint color. This kind of neutral background for an exterior really make green plant material pop.

I just love the avant garde lines to this lounge chair!

The chair is by Cane-line and is part of a collection called 'Breeze'.

This is a 'sand finish' concrete in a Davis color called 'Mesa Buff'. I use this color combination often and love to add beach rocks at every opportunity I can. The dark grey beach rocks against the tan concrete make for an extra bit of garden detail.

I found this bag a couple of months ago and just can't get it off my mind. It is a Classic Tote from Wm. J. Mills & Co Sailmakers in Greenport, New York. This company has been around forever and makes these bags out of sturdy canvas used on boats. I love the simple style of this bag, you just can't go wrong. It comes on lots of other colors too.

I have always had a love affair with ribbons.

The geometry of this one is so appealing!

This is printed grosgrain black with

white circles and is from the Ribbon Spot.

This is a Garden Studio fireplace we

installed a couple of years ago

and I still just love the simplicity of it.

I just started using this ceramic tile on patios for Garden Studio projects. The price point is really agreeable and the color and texture is so clean. It is by Classic Tile and Mosaic and is part of a group of tile called Modern Limestone. This one is called Steel Grey.

This Winter flowering plant is called Helleborus 'Mardi Gras Black Shades'. It likes full to partial shade and moist soil. It grows 12"-18" tall and 24" wide. I am always looking for interesting shade plants and this one adds lots of depth!

This galvanized metal planter is so simple and elegant.

These cobblestones add a european patina to any garden!

Sometimes the most simple details are the best.

You can never go wrong with simple

glass votives with tea lights.

This groundcover is called Dark Dancer White Clover,

Trifolium repens 'Atropurpureum'.

It is a perennial and gets to be 3" - 8" tall and 12" - 18" wide.

I love the drama of this tree. The grey weeping foliage really adds a unique focal point to a garden. This is called Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca Pendula', Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar and is a slow grower to 15'.

Pelargonium sidoides, Silverleaf Geranium

The grey foliage combined with the dark flower on this Geranium is only part of the reason I love this plant so much. Pelargoniums are easy plants in the garden and this one needs only a little water once established.

This is a simple concrete pot but the round shape makes it intriguing!

When Garden Studio was approached to help out this yard we were confronted with a common complaint, 'I never go into my backyard, I want to make use of my outdoor space!' Time and again we hear this story-line and this installation is a great example of why I love what I do. Before this re-do the yard was defined by a poorly placed outdoor kitchen, a grass area bordered by over grown tropical plants and a dull patio with an old teak table set. To some, this scenario might sound all too familiar. Garden Studio came on board and created a series of outdoor destinations that implore you to go outside. The trick is 'food, fire and water'. Our nature as humans is still so primal. I believe we are instinctively drawn to these basic elements. Who does not yearn to sit in a comfortable chair near a fire and chat with good friends? And when have you ever been to a party where people were not gathered around the kitchen area anticipating a meal? And who can resist a body of water on a hot day or even the sound of a tranquil fountain?

In all honesty the homeowners did use this grass area for a number of years. It was a great place for little kids to run and play. But as their household grew the grass was no longer useful. The new pool is like a vacation at home for this family of five with a Golden Retriever who takes a swim daily.

We used texture throughout this landscape to counter-balance the simple Ranch Style home that is dominated by white smooth stucco. This stone veneer brought out the warm browns and greys of the home's interior. The veneer is called Montana Rockworks, McGregor Lake Ledge and is available at Thompson's Building Materials.

To further create a tranquil setting and to connect the pool area to the deep seat area we built a trough fountain to feed a flow of water to the pool. This fountain feature is artfully placed at the end of an entry courtyard drawing the visitor into the backyard space. I always believe that each space should feed into the next to create flow and movement through a garden landscape.

The tile choice is called Sumi-e Stacked 1/2" x 1"

The natural texture of the tile against the smooth concrete coping, the color by Davis is called Mesa Buff, helped with the effort to balance simple surfaces with texture.

For the pool bottom the homeowners chose a 'Midnight Blue' Pebble Tec. This is both a practical and aesthetic choice. Pebble Tec has a rougher finish than typical pool plaster and is popular because it lasts longer. The effect is a deep blue oasis.

Pebble Tec colors can be customized. We chose to exclude the red and green pebble colors for this pool and got a slightly more grey blue color as a result.

The Deep Seat Fire Pit area feeds directly off the family's living space. A large French Door Slider was installed to help create a generous flow to this inviting space that can hold up to 6-8 people around the fire.

The tan Smooth Stucco, Omega #405, brings a warm sandy color that plays off the Slate hardscape patio. 4" Trough Planters with Coral Sea gravel are planted with Echervia, Sedum and Ajuga.

We chose bright green plant foliage like this Aoenium to add pop.

Before the remodel the Outdoor Kitchen was poorly placed. The oversized counter was right in the middle of the patio blocking flow and making the yard feel disjointed. We moved the whole space to the edge of the patio so that it is useful but not the dominant feature of the yard.

The Courtyard before the remodel was plain and dull. Fresh new concrete and an architectural stone wall along with a fountain breathed new life into the space and gave the entry into the house instant elegance. We sourced this fountain from Garden Temple in Studio City.

The fountain bubbles and sounds like a babbling brook. Although simple this sculptural fountain is carved out of basalt and adds an organic element to the space.

Prior to the remodel the Front Entry hardscaping was an old grey concrete with steps that were uninspired. We re-laid the paving in a 'sand finish' concrete in a warm tan color, Davis 'Mesa Buff'. Detail was added to the steps by allowing a 4" separation between which was planted with Sedum and Ajuga.

To add even more texture we placed piles of rocks around

the planters and at the base of the fountain.

This 1"-2" rock is called 'Buff Beach' and is available in most building supply outlets.

We included an outdoor shower in this install. It comes in handy after a day at the beach.

This outdoor remodel though simple and neutral adds almost 2000 square feet of elegant living and entertaining space. With texture as our inspiration Garden Studio transformed an undervalued yard into a space that invites friends and family to relax and unwind.

Before the remodel this backyard had been very well loved over the years. The homeowner, an avid gardner, had invested many happy hours in her backyard space but she came to Garden Studio for a change of pace. She wanted the garden to become a destination for friends and family to gather and enjoy. The existing gravel patio and lush garden borders had run their course and were no longer feeling useful.

The homeowner came to Garden Studio for help and right away we saw potential. Not only was there an inviting garden corner but with a little thought we realized that the small room connected to the garage could be opened up to create an outdoor kitchen bar with a perfect place to locate an outdoor flat screen T.V. The homeowners are big college football fans so we could imagine entertaining groups in Fall for games.

we added a cozy firepit and built-in seating.

This firepit was built out of a

reclaimed limestone trough.

These 4" planter troughs break up the

hardscape so that the space still feels like a garden.

We had a custom teak tabletop made to

cover the firepit when not in use.

This way the space can serve a dual purpose.

We removed the walls and window of the shed

and really opened up the space.

The shed space now provides an overhang

to protect the flatscreen T.V. and outdoor kitchen bar.

We also added this custom fountain feature. The reclaimed limestone trough and limestone floral detail behind the spout were the starting points for the fountain inspiration. We built a stone wall as a backdrop for the reclaimed pieces.

The homeowners are so happy with their new found square footage. Now when they entertain, guests can spill outside into an outdoor living space that seats groups large and small. After the backyard remodel everyone can enjoy the garden space, not just the avid gardner.

A Field Trip.....

On a recent Saturday afternoon I dragged my boys on a Field Trip to Laguna Canyon. A current Garden Studio client had told us about a great resource for reclaimed materials called Traditional Reclaimed Materials and we had heard that they were serving wine and appetizers and giving tours of their site. Perfect! What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. My boys weren't thrilled about the idea but when we got there the owners let the them run happily through the grounds. The canyon was beautiful!!! And wow, what a great resource!

The owners travel to Europe yearly to procure these beautiful reclaimed materials. Anything from limestone pavers to gnarled stone troughs to well worn fireplace mantles. Traditional Reclaimed Materials is open to the trade only and Garden Studio is thrilled to have it as a new resource for our clients.

These limestone pavers are a subtle grey.

It can be used for interior and exterior flooring and

Traditional Reclaimed Materials has a lot of it in stock.

These cobbles were pulled out of

European roads and come in many colors.

This architectural floral detail could be built into a

custom fountain backsplash or onto a fireplace.

These 1" x 6" terracotta bricks with a chunky

over-grout give an old world feel.

I love the large the over sized proportions of these vessels.

Even in a small garden the large scale adds drama and interest as a focal point.

Try placing a large vessel in a large planter surrounded by Blue Oat grass.

Add Soft Grey to your Plant Palette

I have had the opportunity to see so many residential yards over the years and the one failing I see over and over is a garden that is 'flat'. What I mean by that is that the plants are all the same color of medium green foliage. The result is a dull plant palette............... There is no contrast! Yes there are usually some flowers but basically the plain green garden is dull.

Here is one way to breath life into a dull garden............

add plants with foliage that is 'Soft Grey'.

Cerastium tomentosum

These look great in large swaths, placed under trees or at the edge

of a perennial planter these have a meadow effect.

Olea eurpoea

Olive

Add an Olive as an anchor.

Plant medium green foliage beneath such as Cascading Rosmary.

These add drama and distinction.

and were featured in the March issue

of Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.

Jim and Kelly Neiger and Cory and Susan Thabit were

among friends that gathered for the evening's festivities.

Our lovely Low Country Supper was catered by Brian Dobbin.

Spanish Moss was the base for the centerpiece

evoking imagery of the South.

Magnolia branches and flowers added a woodsy feel.

Biscuits and crab legs were served on galvanized metal trays.

These mason jar candle holders fit the

Low Country aesthetic perfectly!

Simple pillar candles and globe lights

were used create a warm glow.

With a full belly and a warm heart I was one happy low country gal.

Chef Robin Bodwin who works with Brian Dobbin was kind

enough to share her recipe for Black-Eyed Peas!

Yum, you won't believe how good these are..............

Black-Eyed Peas (Hoppin John)

You must have these on New Year’s Day. A whole years luck depends upon it, and a whole days eating satisfaction.

Serves 6 to 8

Ingredients

1 pound dried black-eyed peas
2 tablespoons butter
1 yellow onion, small diced
3 whole garlic cloves
2 stalks celery
2 ½ quarts chicken stock
1 tablespoons salt
1 teaspoons black pepper
1 teaspoons cayenne
1 bay leaf
1-tablespoon hot sauce

Preparation

1.Soak dried beans in water over night
2. In heavy stock pan melt butter and sauté onions, garlic, celery.
3. Add black-eyed peas, stock, salt and pepper and cayenne and bay leaf.
4. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to medium-low and cook until peas are tender. About 1 to 1 ½ hours. (remove bay leaf)
5. Finish peas with hot sauce and salt and pepper as needed.

Pool tile can be a challenge! There is the 1" x 1" glass tiles that have dominated pool installations for a long time now. Next came the 1/2" x 1" glass tile in a 'Running Brick' pattern which was a nice change. But take a look at this.........1/2 inch x 1 inch 'Stacked' glass tile!

This tile has a natural edge to it and the colors are so elegant and subtle. We are currently installing this at one of our Landscape Installations and in Corona del Mar. I will follow up with posts that include pictures of our progress.

An Afternoon at the Getty Villa

On Sunday I commandeered my family from our busy sports schedule for an afternoon at the Getty Villa. It was worth it..........

I have been to the Villa before but on this visit I was

more aware of the beautiful canyon in which the Villa is located.

The eucalyptus and coastal sage scrub sit

in contrast to the formality of the Villa.

We toured the Greek and Roman antiquities on display in the Villa

as well as the current exhibit that explores the parallels

between the Aztec and Roman Empires.

I absolutely loved this gold wreath. This is a Greek wreath dated 300 - 100 BC and would have been modeled after those wreaths given as prizes in athletic contests.

The leaves are meant to be that of a Laurel.

The Herb Garden.....

The terraced hillside garden with rows of Olive Trees.

A formal boxwood garden.

I love the simplicity of this public resting space.

This is an alcove at the museum and the materials

contrast so nicely with the formality of the Villa.

We ended our outing at Gladstone's for Fish in Malibu.

Plant Palette Winners

From time to time I am going to share my 'Plant Palette Winners'. These are plants that are tried and true. They are plants that I use often and that serve a variety of purposes, plus are usually readily available. When used right these plants speak volumes in the garden.

Dianella revoluta 'Baby Bliss' is a grass-like perennial.

With Spring in the air a touch of Pink feels so fresh.

Here are some suggestions.

This Tahitian Sunset Hybrid Tea Rose adds such a

nice blush of pink to a garden bed.

This Salvia 'greggii' is a bright pink perennial

that can be added to any sunny planter bed.

Even 'Landscapers' like to get-away!

Heart Wine Bar has only been open 5 months. The interior is simple urban industrial, so cool!

A perfect glass of wine and a cheese plate........

This is one of my favorite City Gardens. It is nestled in among the huge glass high rises but brings in just enough nature to remind the visiter of things beyond the crazy city environment.

This is Town Hall Restaurant, mmmmmmm.....the oysters are soooo good!

Zuni Cafe is our absolute favorite San Francisco lunch!

They have the best artisan bread, my husband Eric is about to dig in.....

The wood burning oven cooks up the ultimate thin crust pizza.

Everything is delicious with a glass of white wine.....

This baked Chicken is cooked in the wood burning oven, it takes an hour to cook but it is worth the wait!

I love this copper bar surface!

This is a small, narrow yard that needed to deliver maximum entertaining space for several families at a time. Before the yard remodel no one went outside, the space was dull and unusable! To pull guests outside we set up a big outdoor kitchen counter for guests to gather. The cozy fireplace entices people to relax and the built-in seating gives people a reason to be outside. We added a putting green and dart board to a narrow portion of the yard. This family of 5 loves the fun outdoor distraction. Its also great to look at and easy to maintain.

Reading Between the Lines

Sometimes we forget about the spaces between the spaces. One of my favorite ways to add impact to any project is to sneak in detail where you might least expect it.

Grout lines are the perfect venue to showcase beach rocks and seashells.

Groundcover helps break up this concrete patio. Dymondia margaretae is one of my favorites because it is so durable and the olive green color is soft and subtle.

In this patio we left a 4" gap or trough between the hardscape patio and the edge of a spa wall. This gave us the opportunity to add texture with pea gravel and groundcover. You can also add small low voltage lights to illuminate these low walls adding even more impact.

It's Time to Freshen Things Up

Watch as we give this property a fresh new look, and....... a new spa too. We just started this project in Irvine California this week. The owners had their yard installed by a local Landscape Contractor almost 10 years ago and although it looked nice for for a while the homeowners complained that it was looking too 'Over Grown' and 'Prehistoric'. The want a cleaner look with plant material that is beautiful yet low maintenance. That is where Garden Studio came in. The homeowners also realized that it was time to install a new Spa along with an elegant Water Feature outside the formal dining room. The existing architecture of the home is very attractive and the bones of the yard are good.

So Garden Studio has a plan to turn this property around and give it the fresh look the home owners are looking for. Check back and I will give you updates on our progress along with the finished project.

My Favorite Rose

Rosa 'Joseph's Coat'

I really admire roses and appreciate those gardeners that can keep them looking beautiful but as a landscape designer I use then only sparingly. They are a demanding plant that need tending and all too often look bad. However here is one on my favorites. Anyone can have great success with this one....... Rosa 'Joseph's Coat' is a climber and produces clustered buds. The blooms put on quite a show with petals changing from yellow to orange to crimson. How fun..... This rose has glossy green leaves and as a small climber can be managed in our backyards. The good news is that they are considered a 'Re-bloomer', that means that they don't just bloom in Spring but re-bloom throughout the year. This rose requires full sun, has a light fragrance and is considered very resistant to disease. It's practically perfect in every way......

January and February are a great time to plant roses. Keep in mind that once you plant a climber like this give it a couple of years before you prune it back. Once it is established it is very easy to maintain. Use it to surround a garage door, along a picket fence or on the posts of a shade structure.

Wood has always been an obvious choice for Patio Furniture but as a decor choice we sometimes forget it's value.

The natural wood bowl is so graceful.

W e a t h e r i n g the 'STORM'..........

Wow......now that was a big storm and it sounds like there might be more to follow this season. We haven't seen weather like that in years. The dark gloomy cloud cover really brought out the vivid colors in the landscape! The deep rich colors of green in the garden came alive and the tan and grey colors in the stucco and stonework looked so rich. The warm terra cotta color in the used bricks gave an earthy hue. What a contrast to our usual bright sun. Actually from a design perspective our Southern California sun, as nice as it is, can 'wash out' the landscape.

This is why it is always a good idea to choose deep rich colors in both hardscape and softscape decisions. A deep stucco color like Omega #412 in the landscape makes the greens in the garden really come alive.

Be sure to check on a couple of things in the garden once the rain has passed:

Place cushions on an angle in the sun to allow ventilation and to prevent mildew.

Clear drains if the your gardner has not been able to drop by for clean up. A small pile of leaves can clog the drain and create a small flood in the yard.

Turn off irrigation for a while, the garden is drenched but don't forget to turn it back on when things warm up.

Be ready for the next storm and plan to set aside the afternoon with a fire in the fireplace and a good book.........sometimes we need an excuse like rainy weather.
